Who is required to get a DOT drug and alcohol test in Mesa?

DOT drug and alcohol screening is federally mandated by the Department of Transportation for “safety-sensitive” employees. A safety-sensitive employee is someone who holds a job that can impact both their own safety and the safety of the public. DOT Drug and Alcohol screenings are mandated for the following agencies:

  • Federal Aviation Administration: Flight crews, flight attendants, aircraft dispatchers, ground security coordinators, etc.
  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration: Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) holders who operate Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs), vehicles that carry 16 passengers or more (including the driver), or vehicles that transport hazardous materials and are required to display a DOT placard.
  • U.S. Coast Guard: Crew members operating a commercial vessel.
  • Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration: Operations, maintenance, and emergency response workers.
  • Federal Railroad Administration: Hours of Service Act personnel, engine & train workers, signal service workers, or train dispatchers.
  • Federal Transit Administration: Vehicle operators, controllers, mechanics, and armed security.

Drug Testing

Drug testing is required for all safety–sensitive employees. These tests are required for the following situations:

  • Pre-employment, or before you start your job responsibilities.
  • Reasonable suspicion/cause, when a trained supervisor reasonably believes/suspects that you are under the influence of drugs.
  • Random testing, random tests must use a truly random selection process. This is done through a consortium where a computer randomly generates employees names for testing and are completed quarterly.
  • Return-to-duty testing, required after a violation of the drug and alcohol rules. You cannot return to any DOT job before being tested and may be subject to unannounced testing in the first 12 months. These tests must be conducted under direct observation.
  • Follow-up testing, that takes place after return-to-duty. A Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) manages the follow-up testing for up to 5 years, determining how many times an employee is tested, and for what substance. These are completed in addition to other DOT required testing.
  • Post-accident testing, is required if you are involved in an accident. An alcohol test must occur within 8 hours of the accident, and a drug test within 32 hours.

These prices include the collection, test, and MRO (Medical review officer) report (DOT only) or a non MRO report.

  • Reasonable Suspicion Testing
  • Return-to-Duty Testing after a positive test
  • Follow-up Testing
    • DOT rules state post-accident testing should be conducted within two hours of the accident. If a test is not administered within this time period, the employer must document the cause of the delay. Under no circumstances should post-accident testing be conducted beyond eight hours after the accident.

Hair Drug Analysis

A hair follicle drug test, also known as a hair drug test, screens for illicit drug use and the misuse of prescription medication. During this test, a small amount of hair is removed from your head using scissors. The sample is then analyzed for signs of drug use during the 90 days preceding the test. This test is great to perform on new employees because it allows you to see drug use for up to 90 days vs. a urine test which is only viable for a few days. The price includes the collection, the test, and a report.

Consortium

A Plus Chiropractic Care provides consortium services for the trucking industry. A drug screening consortium is an association of companies or groups of employers that join together, as a single entity, for the purpose of the Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing of its members.

Any person operating a CMV requiring a CDL in intrastate or interstate commerce is required to participate in a DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing Program. (Please refer to § 382.305 question 11). Owner-operators must register with a consortium and participate in the Consortium's random testing pool.
